Thermal Recovery Unit Fast Facts

Thermal Recovery Unit

  • Addresses Problematic Wastes
  • Produces Renewable Power
  • Converts Waste to Energy
  • Reduces Greenhouse Gases

The Thermal Recovery Unit (TRU) is another step toward energy independence. The TRU continuously converts organic materials to syngas, steam and carbon char.

Technology Overview

The TRU is a turnkey solution for business and governments to bring finality to problem wastes, while reducing green house gas emissions and producing renewable energy. The TRU:

  • Processes tires, plastics, wood, MSW, industrial, medical, agricultural and oil field wastes. Reductions of up to 92% of initial feed volumes can be achieved.
  • Reactivates carbon.
  • Meets all regulatory and performance standards set by USEPA under the "Clean Air Act".
  • Offers Version 5.0 in 1000 and 4000 pound per hour systems.
  • Operates as a stationary unit or as a transportable unit mounted to truck or barge.

How the TRU Works

Feedstocks are never incinerated, but rather gasified. The processing method of the Thermal Recovery Unit is to heat any organic material in the absence of Oxygen. First, the solid fuel is shredded and blended and fed through an airlock system to ensure an Oxygen-deficient environment in the retort chamber. The TRU then heats the materials to temperatures of up to 1000 degrees Celsius where the Carbon atom is broken off, leaving sequestered Carbon and a volatile gas. The feedstock remains in the retort chamber until all volatile material is gasified and directed through the transition zone, where gas conditions are monitored to ensure optimal performance.
From here, the gases are pulled into the thermal oxidizer, where they are mixed with oxygen and combusted. Due to the high temperatures in the thermal oxidizer, toxic and noxious wastes are eliminated. This heat can be used to fire a steam turbine generator to produce electricity. The TRU discharges any remaining solids through the discharge air lock. These solids are a sterile, non-leachable form of sequestered Carbon.

Tires to Energy

One of the most exciting uses of the TRU is converting tires to energy. Tires provide a near limitless fuel for the TRU. A passenger car tire contains the energy equivalent of seven gallons of oil. The TRU can process this fuel very efficiently while at the same time sequestering harmful green house gas emissions. Tires are shredded and fed into the TRU continuously to fire a steam turbine generator to produce electricity.
